who are we? What are we about?
The History:
Edward Taylor was a music teacher living in Barkingside and in about 1950 he formed a small choir from pupils, their parents and friends. The group grew to over 80 members, becoming known as the Edward Taylor Singers and giving concerts in Ilford County High School, Ilford Town Hall and local churches.
When Edward Taylor retired his place was taken by Ian Gray, Matthew Watts, Lawrence Tatnall and others with the name changing to Mossford Singers, then the New Essex Choral Society.
Generous support from Redbridge Arts Council enabled the choir to give ambitious concerts with high quality orchestral players and soloists.
Today the name is New Essex Choir with a membership of about 30.
The ensemble's Director of Music is Tom Rodgers.
Most concerts are given at The Drive Methodist Church with a substantial choral work in April contrasting with a medley of light music in July then Christmas music in December.
